Lightweight cold-formed steel could be the housing material of the future. It is currently used in the UK for purlins and rails, metal decking, wall partitions and cladding support systems. Only a a handful of houses in the UK are built using cold-formed steel. Its advantages: are a high strength-to-weight ratio, which makes it capable of providing long spans; it does not rot when galvanised; it has a life expectancy of up to 1,000 years; it can be prefabricated into panels and quickly erected, saving time by up to 20%; and it is cheaper.
