Downturn fails to ease skills shortage fears
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry requires an extra 350,000 people to become qualified in construction skills by the year 2002, to compensate for the high number of qualified people leaving the profession due to retirement. The total number of people employed in the UK construction industry is expected to increase to 1.48 million by the year 2003 from 1.38 million people in 1997. The number of directly employed construction staff is expected to increase due to changes in taxation law affecting self-employed people.

Home truths
Article Abstract:
The white paper on rural issues will be used by ministers to propose ways that local authorities can have more power and responsibility to provide new homes in partnership with housebuilders. This is due to DoE projections estimating a 23% rise in the number of households by 2016, and the need to find a further 4.4 million homes over the next 21 years.
