Keyhole surgery
Article Abstract:
A new, five-storey research facility is being built in London's Bloomsbury on a site where access is limited to a width of just 3 mt. Access to the 6.7 million pounds sterling building, jointly funded by the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and the Wellcome Trust, is so tight that there is no room for an above-ground site office, which has had to be located in the basement of an existing building. An additional problem is the site's unusually high water table, requiring the ground floor of the new building to have a sandwich construction.

Breathtaking
Article Abstract:
UK architect Roy Grimwade has developed a timber framing system for walls which uses recycled materials and provides a high level of insulation. The walls are made up of layers allowing the wall to breathe. Moisture moves towards the wall cavity but water cannot enter. Grimwade's earlier version of the wall panels won him the Royal Society of Arts' Better Environment Award in 1990. His design allowed heat savings of up to 100 pounds sterling a year.

Village people
Article Abstract:
An increasingly popular destination for holiday-makers in the U.K. is the all-inclusive holiday village. Modern holiday villages are far removed from the original budget camps and include luxury accommodation, shops, restaurants and sophisticated leisure facilities. Construction work in the holiday-village sector means large and lucrative projects, but developers require contractors to meet tight deadlines and fixed budgets.
