Laing half-year profit leaps 48%

Laing saw pre-tax profit reach 18.4 million pounds sterling in the six months to Jun 30, 1998, up by 6 million pounds sterling from the year-earlier period. Turnover rose by 149 million pounds sterling to 810.7 million pounds sterling. The company experienced difficulties in the Middle East, especially with an office for Abu Dhabi Oil Co. Its property development and housing operations contributed 14.2 million pounds sterling to profit.

Raine was good buy, says McAlpine

Alfred McAlpine believes that its purchase of housebuilder Raine in Jun 1997 was a good move, even though it was extensively criticized at the time. The former concern has announced interim pre-tax profit up by 331% to 5.3 million pounds in the six months to Jun 30, 1997. In the same period, Raine saw unaudited pre-tax profit of 3.6 million pounds sterling on turnover of 379.4 million pounds sterling.
