Laying it on the line
Article Abstract:
Bricklayer Peter Mynch, who was at the forefront of a dispute with contracting firm John Sisk, does not really have any interest in being in conflict with employers. However, he found himself in this situation when, along with other bricklayers, he refused to sign a contract which did not comply with the construction industry's National Working Rule Agreement. He has been accustomed to negotiating for himself on jobs, and has now gained experience of negotiating on behalf of others.

Staying the course
Article Abstract:
Master bricklayer Tom Swinson works with the man who was apprenticed to him in 1952. The two men, who are aged 78 and 60, began working together again at Alton Towers pleasure park, UK, in 1996. They feel that their age is an advantage when working with the Victorian building methods and materials of Alton Towers. Former apprentice John Stubbs still sometimes feels like the young apprentice to Swinson, despite his lifetime's experience in the construction industry.

Industrial inaction
Article Abstract:
Many employees in the UK construction industry would be unwilling to strike if the current conflict between trade unions and employers continues. However, this is not necessarily a favourable situation for employers, as most employees would also not be very willing to cross a picket line. Against this background, a strike by even a very small number of employees could have a significant impact on productivity on large construction projects.
