Listen and learn
Article Abstract:
Deaf building consultants AFM Access Consultant and Architect Chris Harrowell and Technological Research Associates Architectural Technician/Surveyor Reg Cobb point out deaf people are often successful working as architects because they are very good at observation. Harrowell uses Typetalk to answer telephone calls but the increasing use of voice recognition software and e-mail will reduce the need of the operator. Harrowell suggests the use of the loop systems for deaf people is not always appropriate. They would both support a deafness awareness campaign.

The business end of design
Article Abstract:
Many architects still believe that following good business practices will mean that they will be forced to make compromises on design. The status of architecture and architects has fallen over recent decades, and will continue to do so while architects think in this way. Some younger architects are more in favour of good business practices, but the profession may collapse completely before they have a chance to determine policy.

Practice policy
Article Abstract:
British architects at United Kingdom practice Scott, Brownrigg and Turner believe that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) will eventually be considered as a worthwhile product in construction project work. They acknowledge that many consumers, particularly those in Europe, are concerned about the environmental impact of PVC but believe that the product, like household plastics, will soon be considered acceptable.
