Losing count
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken on the Spring 1993 results of the top 12 UK construction companies shows that huge write-offs has resulted in losses but that most are have reported an upturn in the housing market since Nov 1992. The 12 contractors made an overall loss of 772 million pounds sterling; Tarmac made the highest loss at 350 million pounds sterling. Most invested too much in commercial and residential property. Best results were achieved by Laing who made a profit of 12 million pounds sterling and Barratt who made a profit of 5 million pounds sterling, but this was due to good 1991 and 1992 results.

Bellway ready for expansion
Article Abstract:
The UK housebuilders Bellway is the only medium-sized company that has announced 1992 profits. In the year to the end of July 1992, Bellway made a profit of 12.5 million pounds sterling. Bellway has been successful because it foresaw the end of the 1980's boom 18 months beforehand and took precautions, even though it is Newcastle-based, where house prices and demand are still rising. 1992 production rates are 58% in the North and 42% in the South. Bellway intends to expand in North London, Wessex, Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes, boosting house production to 1710 in 1991/92.

Designed to be ready for growth
Article Abstract:
YRM, involved in multidisciplinary design work, has had to cut costs by making around 60 staff redundant over the last 12 months, but believes that is now in a good position to expand both in the UK and in Europe. It has maintained reasonably good financial performance in a very difficult business climate for architects, and will base future expansion on its existing offices in London, Berlin and Paris. Recent high-profile commissions undertaken by the company are discussed.
