Article Abstract:

ASDA Stores Ltd. commissioned architect Aukett Associates to design a building for its Colchester store which could later be adapted for other UK locations. Aukett consulted all the supermarket's operational teams and designed a building based on the concept of a large, airy, traditional market. There are rectangular buildings at the front and rear, but the huge volume of its main trading area, with its barrel roof and just four supporting columns, is a dramatic feature. The Colchester building works well, but Asda's hope of repeating it successfully is yet to be tested.
