Old school ties
Article Abstract:
The UK's Architectural Association has a strong reputation for encouraging the best design talent, according to Will Alsop, who studied there in the 1960s. However, he has become more cynical about the institution, which is currently celebrating its 150th anniversary, over recent years. He is now an external examiner there, and feels that its students make excessive use of difficult and obscure language. Oliver Blumschein, who is hoping to graduate from the Architectural Association in summer 1997, believes that the institution is robust enough to adapt to changing circumstances.

Industry cool on partnership reform
Article Abstract:
The UK construction industry has given a lukewarm response to the Department of Trade and Industry's plans to work towards the creation of new limited liability partnership legislation. Limited liability partnerships, popular in the US and Australia and pending in Jersey, protect the personal assets of partners not held responsible in cases of negligence. Industry representatives say the proposals do not address the issue of joint and several liability under which consultants are liable for project problems even if they are not personally responsible.
