Online start-up offers users free stamps

Postage4Free.com Inc of Miami, FL, offers free stamps to visitors in exchange for filling out an application form and viewing advertising messages, special offers and coupons. Visitors will be sent a packet of 10 pre-stamped envelopes four to six weeks after they filled out their online application, which seeks demographic information such as age, gender, personal habits and family status. The company will generate revenues by signing in advertisers who will have their ads placed directly on the pre- stamped envelopes.

Webvan cuts GA, CA operations

Webvan Group said it will scale down operations in Atlanta, GA, resulting in the elimination of 485 jobs. Previously, the online grocer shut down its operations in Sacramento, CA, resulting in 17 layoffs. The company also plans to slash 400 jobs at its headquarters in Foster City, CA. After the layoffs, the company would have a total workforce of 3,500 workers. During 1st qtr 2001, Webvan registered a net loss of $216 million, up from a net loss of $57 million during 1st qtr 2000.
