The hospital is to be completed in 1993 and is the largest in the UK. The contract involved doors which could give up to one hour and half-an-hour fire protection and non-rated doors with both single and double swing action. The doors were to be installed in the wards, theatres, private rooms and offices. The design needed a core material covered with an impact-resistant plastic section so that it could be easily replaced and cleaned.

Delaying tactics
Article Abstract:
1992 will see a record number of UK building industry graduates, estimated to be around 150,000. The continuing recession will result in professional opportunities in the building and construction industry staying at 1990 levels and only the high quality graduates will win the few jobs available. According to the Assn of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, employers' bookings for the 1992 Milk Round of universities and colleges is down from 1991 as they return to rigorous selection criteria. Many UK students are looking for European and international recruitment opportunities.

Window dressing
Article Abstract:
Window blinds are important for privacy and to control solar glare and heat. Many UK designers are starting to integrate blinds into the design of the building as a result of the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) which states that all work stations must have adequate, adjustable window coverings. It is estimated that solar shading could decrease air conditioning plants by up to 25%. External blinds are more efficient at reducing solar heat than internal blinds
