17 more states sue PCH

Article Abstract:

Publishers Clearing House (PCH) has been sued by 17 other US states for false advertising and for misleading consumers. The lawsuits claim that PCH's advertisement gave the impression that customers are guaranteed winners in its $21 million sweepstakes. The lawsuit filed by the state of Minnesota is asking for $25,000 per violation while California wants PCH to stop doing business in the state. PCH senior VP Deborah Holland said that they are seeking a peaceful and satisfactory compromise with the states.

PCH agrees to pay $30 million to settle lawsuit

Article Abstract:

Publishers Clearing House (PCH) of Port Washington, NY, has agreed to pay $30 million to settle a class-action suit involving its sweepstakes advertising and marketing practices. The suit was filed in 1998 by 10 consumers in Illinois who said that PCH misled them into buying magazines and books by making them think that it would increase their chances of winning an $11 million sweepstakes.

AFP reaches agreement with 4 states

Article Abstract:

American Family Publishers (AFP) has reached a settlement accord with West Virginia, South Carolina, Florida and Indiana, all of which filed lawsuits against AFP in 1998 for alleged deceptive practices. The magazine clearinghouse and sweepstakees provider, based in Jersey City, NJ, agreed to pay $4 million to the states, but did not admit any wrongdoing. In addition to deceptive practices, AFP was also accused of scheming to defraud, civil theft and lottery.
