Peru had the fastest growing economy in the world in 1994, with construction the fastest growing sector. However half of the population still lives below the poverty line and the country intends to spend $5.8 billion during the next five years, to modernise its highway network and spread the water and sewerage network. Construction and materials supply cannot cope with sustained growth.

The country is to seek finance and bidders for its private infrastructure projects, and environmental advice to help raise the standards of the water industry.

UK consultants, contractors and suppliers are need in Argentina and some companies may establish loose associations in both Chile and Argentina. The construction sector rose by 14.3% in 1994, and some $86.8 billion is to be spent on infrastructure between now and 2000.
