Power to the people

Article Abstract:

The vast majority of office workers would like to be able to control the temperature of their part of the building by opening a window, but this is not possible in most modern buildings. Designers of indoor climate systems usually fail to take into account the needs of office occupiers, leading to complaints about user comfort. However, some window manufacturers are now starting to offer a 'passive climate system,' which allows office workers to control their environment and also reduces energy consumption, as demand on air conditioning systems is lower if windows can be open or closed as required.

Article Abstract:

Pitney Bowes, a mailing equipment manufacturer, is undergoing refurbishment of its headquarters and production facility on the outskirts of Harlow. Staff remain on site as the 1960s building is stripped and reclad, and new office areas and reception and security block are created. The new heating system is controlled from the office floor enabling staff to alter their own environment. The white cladding system gives the building a more modern look.

White spirit

Article Abstract:

David Morley Architects has designed the Test and County Cricket Board's new headquarters at Lords. The building stands on the site of the old cricket school and is a simple three storey rectangular box, designed to keep energy consumption low. The underside of the concrete floor slabs have been lightly rendered rather than being covered by suspended ceilings, and the building is designed to allow in as much natural light as possible.
