Railtrack to team up with 'key' QSs
Article Abstract:
Framework agreements are to be signed with nine quantity surveying firms which operate across the UK by Railtrack, the country's largest construction client. Within the firms, which include Turner and Townsend, Gardiner and Theobald and Currie and Brown, Railtrack will work with around 55 'key players' exclusively for up to two years. It will offer these people the chance to work on major schemes, and will also guarantee a large flow of work for their employers. The initiative will also ensure that less experienced cost managers are involved.

Specialists slam amended contracts
Article Abstract:
The UK Constructors' Liaison Group (CLG) has criticized contractors John Sisk, Alfred McAlpine and Kyle Stewart for adjudication provisions included in forms amended to meet the terms of the Construction Act. There has been particular criticism of the McAlpine form, which the believes could delay payment to subcontractors by up to five years after disputes are resolved by an adjudicator. The CLG feels that the contractors' provisions represent an attack on the whole purpose of the Construction Act.

Private firms 'don't understand CCT'
Article Abstract:
Local authorities in Britain claim that some private companies do not fully understand the new compulsory competitive tendering process. In a paper sent to the environment minister, the Association of Metropolitan Authorities says that the construction industry's low success rate when bidding for public construction and property contracts can be blamed on their poor understanding of the tendering rules. Some private companies have charged local authorities with anti-competitive behaviour.
