Peace work
Article Abstract:
The level of devastation in Beirut, Lebanon, is described as perceived during a British trade mission to the country led by Sir George Young, construction minister. The masterplan for reconstructing Beirut's city centre is outlined, with the success of the city's regeneration thought to be dependent on private investment and foreign aid. The reconstruction of Lebanon is expected to cost $12.9 billion over a ten-year period. Soft loans from foreign countries are also required to fund reconstruction, with Italy having pledged $419 million and France $35 million. Routes for UK materials producers to gain contracts in the Lebanon are described.

Will it be safer under PAYE?
Article Abstract:
Self-employed construction industry workers have a poorer health and safety record than those employed under pay as you earn schemes, say some. Building union UCATT representatives are pleased that the industry will soon employ fewer subcontractors because they believe that health and safety standards will improve. Health and Safety Executive figures, however, show that self-employed individuals have fewer accidents than those in full employment. Some believe that the lower accident rates may be inaccurate.
