Serious reservations
Article Abstract:
Michael Shanly Homes is facing the threat of legal action from prospective purchasers of properties at Belgravia Mews, a development of nine three-bed and 14 two-bed homes in north London, England. The company returned deposits of 500 pounds sterling taken from prospective purchasers, claiming that it had not received planning permission. However, the prospective purchasers believed that the original planning application still stood, as long as the company signed the section 106 proposal to pay 50,000 pounds sterling towards town centre improvements. The council has stated that part of the development must be set aside for gardens.

A TV plague on your houses
Article Abstract:
A UK Channel 4 television documentary in the 'Despatches' series is going to focus on the disadvantages of buying houses built on contaminated land. More than half of the homes built in Britain in 1996 will be on reclaimed land as government policy encourages this. The likely impact of the programme on housebuilders and on government policy is assessed. It is thought that house buyers will not be influenced but, should this assessment prove wrong, there are measures which could be employed to win back public confidence.

Velvet revolution: what's its like to be taken over? It happened to the staff of Admiral Homes Western one year ago this month. (Building Homes)
Article Abstract:
The former land manager of Birse Homes and current managing director of Admiral Homes Western, describes the takeover by Admiral Homes of Birse. He discusses the light impact of the takeover on jobs and the cultural changes. He believes it is easier working for a pure housebuilder rather than a contractor, and the introduction of site specific accounting has created flexibility.
