Services rendered deserve prompt payment
Article Abstract:
The UK economic recession has resulted in bad accounting practices in the construction industry. Main contractors are using self-billing to delay and avoid payment to sub-contractors and building material suppliers. This means that invoices are not produced and if taken to court the absence of invoices makes the contractor non-liable to settle its debts. Many sub-contractors accept a self-billing arrangement as contracts are hard to find.

Time to stop whingeing and look to the future
Article Abstract:
Since the 70s architects have lost the leadership in the building team due to competition. RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) has blamed the recession and the government and is undertaking a report on the future of the profession. The function of the architect has changed since the mid 40s. Originally architects were responsible for: technical specifications; contracts; land surveying; quantities and valuations and the drawing.

Ethics, not etiquette, should guide our conduct
Article Abstract:
The main UK construction industry professional bodies need to reform their professional codes of conduct to be ethics-based and easily monitored and enforced to regain the public's trust. Most organisations' codes of conduct date from the Victorian era and are a mixture of ethics and unenforceable club rules which are non-service orientated. The Royal Institute of British Architects is working towards architectural deregulation.
