Smoke signals

Article Abstract:

Technological improvements undertaken by the UK company RAFT has made radio-based alarm systems more competitive than hardwired alarms. The lack of wiring makes the system faster and cheaper to install. The system is flexible, compact and easily hidden. Problems to do with interference, the sorting out of signals and battery power have been overcome. Lithium batteries are used which last for up to 10 years. A new form of battery with a glass capillary in the centre of the tube has been developed for fire purposes. The capillary will collapse preventing an explosion.

Decline and fall

Article Abstract:

The lack of new projects for high-rise building in the UK has hit the lift industry. Activity has decreased by 20% in 1992 and the market has dropped further than in other European countries. Maintenance portfolios and low-rise hydraulic lifts account for the main work for the industry; the latter accounts for 65%. Otis is cutting its prices and offering standardised packages. Other companies are concentrating on overseas work. Otis has spent 5 million pounds sterling in building and equipping a state-of-the-art training and maintenance centre.

Retail detail

Article Abstract:

House of Fraser's new Rackhams store in Leicester, UK, was opened in Feb 1992, only 32 weeks after Plumb Group, division of Raine Industries, began the 10.5 million pounds sterling design-and-build contract. The 11,000 sq mt store, which is located in the new Shires shopping centre, was completed within budget and on time. The store occupies a space which had been prepared as a shell for the department store chain Lewis's, but the short contract time meant that special solutions had to be found for various design difficulties.
