Sound effects
Article Abstract:
The development of the Lux Cinema, London, England, had to incorporate an auditorium suitable for live shows, dances and also for films. The variety of attractions in the cinema posed some problems for the architect Stephanie Fischer. The walls and ceilings were insulated and the acoustics box was placed within a second box to reduce interference to nearby buildings. Fischer consulted with Malcom Wright of Arup Acoustics who reduced the sound reverberation time to 0.4s. The cost of refitting the 120-seat cinema was 600,000 pounds sterling.

The meaning of life
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common in the UK for construction clients to require specifiers to make decisions based on life-cycle costs. This approach involves taking into account the cost to the client of construction materials and systems over the entire life of the building. It is often linked with environmental considerations. There are many different approaches to calculating life-cycle costs, and research on this subject is being undertaken by the department of the environment, transport and the regions.
