Article Abstract:
Extensive use has been made of smart housing technologies in a flat designed for an elderly or disabled person by the Edinvar Housing Association in Edinburgh, Scotland. The flat is connected to a computer terminal at a local resource centre where round-the-clock assistance can be obtained. Passive infra-red detectors link movement to both lighting and heating, and the smart system also permits the resident to control a number of different, mainly motorized, intelligent appliances.

Caledonian contrasts
Article Abstract:
Architect, Reiach and Hall have used the same curtain walling manufacturers and contractors to produce two contrasting buildings in Scotland. The Strathclyde University Graduate Business School, Glasgow contrasts red sandstone with clear glass curtain walling while the Life Association of Scotland headquarters building in Edinburgh uses bronze anodised glazing and white stone-clad columns. Both curtain walls were produced by Schuco and installed by Nelson Tectonics.

Invisible openings
Article Abstract:
Window and door integration within a curtain wall system is a further development of intelligent buildings relying on thermal dynamics. Seamless-looking windows and doors are complex to design and construct especially when magnetic locks and fire alarm systems are included. Advantages are: visual simplicity; larger sized panes; high technical performance; opening mechanisms compatible with the rest of the wall and consistent construction methods.
