The percentage game

Article Abstract:

There is growing emphasis on margins in the UK construction industry. The top 25 contractors achieved an average margin of 1.2% in 1996, from 0.8% in the period 1982 to 1996, and most believe that margins could go as high as 2%. Many are re-engineering their processes in order to boost margins, and are placing considerable emphasis on improving the way in which their employees deal with clients. In some cases, focusing on simple procedures will produce an increase in margins.

Loss leaders

Article Abstract:

The volume of total construction output in the UK declined by 1% in 1995 from 1994. This was partly responsible for the losses totalling 129 million pounds sterling reported by the 50 largest contractors and housebuilders. Problems were also caused by expenses related to restructuring and by the revaluing of overpriced assets. Particularly large losses were made by Costain, Raine and Trafalgar House.
