The best-laid plans...:exactly where the 4.4 million new homes the government says are needed in the next 20 years will go has become the subject of hot debate
Article Abstract:
It is predicted that a further 4.4 million new homes will be required by 2016 in the UK, to cope with changing demographics, and there has been much debate about how those houses can be accommodated. The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) report edited by Professors Michael Breheny and Peter Hall, planning experts, questions where the demand for new homes will be greatest. Professor Hall advocates a combination of solutions such as new villages and towns, extension of towns and cities and in-filling of vacant sites in urban areas.

The superstore threat to our local town centres
Article Abstract:
UK market towns have lost much business through the development of out-of-town hypermarkets. The Environment Minister Tony Baldry has pioneered research due to be published in Dec 1993 to ascertain what makes town centres popular and how to revive business. Retailers built over 900 food stores in England and Wales during the 80s in towns with a population of over 300,000. They are now focusing on towns with a population of under 300,000; 150 have been built since 1990-93.
