The building services expert
Article Abstract:
The Millennium housing project incorporated innovative approaches to the needs of power, heating and water systems. The water heating system is provided by solar heating panels which can heat the water temperature up to 100 degrees celsius. A low flow ventilation system draws air out of the kitchen and bathrooms and replaces it with fresh, temperature controlled air. Toilet flushing water is collected from washing systems and bath water, recycled and pumped back in to the system for flushing.

Watt a bargain!
Article Abstract:
Up to 3,000 people living on the island of Lerwick, Scotland have been encouraged to take up the offer of cheaper electricity by being connected to a newly installed combined heating and power plant. The connection fee of up to 3,000 pounds sterling is paid for by the council with up to 7% of the housing stock expected to join the scheme by the end of 1999. The complex nature of installing supply pipes for combined heating schemes makes it only suitable on new developments or in rural areas.
