The case for the defence
Article Abstract:
UK construction lawyers are very strongly aware of the benefits of using standard forms as the basis for contractual arrangements for most projects. For this reason, it is wrong to accuse them of being keen to see the disappearance of the JCT and standard forms of building contract. Standard forms are easy to use, they reduce the opportunity for making mistakes and they make the management of projects much simpler. All construction lawyers feel that there are some elements of the standard form that could be improved, but the vast majority do not want to move away from standard forms.

Bovis revamp favours subcontractors
Article Abstract:
A large number of terms that are favourable to subcontractors are being considered by Bovis as it looks at making changes to its in-house contract in preparation for the introduction in 1998 of the Construction Act. The terms include a right for subcontractors to suspend work when not paid and pre-agreed variations and provision for the use of retention bonds, rather than cash retentions. This move has been welcomed by the Specialist Engineering Contractors' Group.
