The outsider
Article Abstract:
The best way to raise margins in the UK construction industry is to boost service standards in order to gain more negotiated work, according to Tarmac head of contracting and fee-earning operations Dr Leslie Atkinson. He is keen to see greater sharing of ideas between Tarmac's various divisions, and also hopes to encourage clients to purchase the company's services as a complete unit, thus cutting Tarmac's costs. He believes that there is still considerable room for improvement in the UK construction industry.

All steamed up
Article Abstract:
Restoring vintage motor and steam vehicles has become an interesting niche area for design-and-build construction contractor EC Gransden, according to Managing Director Derek Gransden. He has been interested in old vehicles for many years, and has an extensive collection. He is particularly proud of the 1927 three-way-tipping Super Sentinel steam wagon he restored himself. The company's joinery shop now builds timber roofs and entire bodies for vintage vehicles.
