Thermal underwear
Article Abstract:
Designer Nicholas Kirkham is pursuing his interest in energy efficiency with a project on a four-storey Victorian terrace house in West London, which he plans to make into three extremely energy-efficient flats. The scheme, being undertaken by design cooperative Site Specific, is intended to show that energy efficiency should be considered for existing buildings, not just for new homes. It is using relatively low technology, and hopes in this way to encourage similar schemes on old houses. Following completion, the energy efficiency of the building will be monitored for two years by the Low Energy Architectural Research Unit.

Winds of change
Article Abstract:
Although wind power from community windmills is used in Denmark, Germany and other European countries, the possibilities of such use in the UK are not even being debated. However the government is investing in large scale wind farms, and is encouraging companies to invest in renewable energy generation. The new Wansbeck General low energy hospital in Ashington, currently being built, will have 10% of its energy requirements supplied by wind power.
