Think thin
Article Abstract:
Architects Richard Rogers Partnership and structural consultants Ove Arup and Partners were faced with the difficult task of adapting their original designs for the Daiwa Securities building, to incorporate additional floor space. To minimize the use of floor space the 18 storey building has very thin floor slabs and only a few columns. The cost of the original building was 48 million pounds sterling but extra work to refit the basement to house generators has increased the price by 20 million pounds sterling. The building in London, England should be ready for occupation in Oct 1998.

Article Abstract:
The new European headquarters of Computer Associates in Slough, England, is in the shape of a W, in honour of company founder Charles Wang. This has made the building very expensive, as two of its corners are too sharp to be occupied. Main contractor Mowlem has a 22.6 million pounds sterling lump-sum contract for the shell and core, while each subcontract package is value-engineered. The building is constructed on an insitu concrete frame, and is covered in green-tinted glazing. The 4.5 million pounds sterling cladding contract has been awarded to curtain-walling specialist Witte.

Article Abstract:
Construction management firm Exterior is constructing a 20 million pounds sterling headquarters building for computer games concern Electronic Arts in Chertsey, England. This building is a hybrid structure of steel with concrete columns raking forward at the crescent-shaped front. A number of problems have been encountered, but the project is generally progressing well, despite the complexity of the design. The most challenging feature is two extremely large fully glazed doors running on rollers at the front of the building.
