Time of reckoning
Article Abstract:
UK building materials suppliers and contractors reduced their workforce and capacity from 1989 due to the recession. This will result in a shortage of supplies, higher prices and delay in 1993 as orders increase. Experts claim that prices could increase to double digit figures for materials and subcontracts. Over 150 steelwork companies have wound up since 1989. The British Constructional Steelwork Association predicts that steel prices will increase by 10% in 1993. Plasterboard manufacuturers have increased their prices by 19% since 1992.

Article Abstract:
Plastic accounts for 65% of the British rainwater drainage market followed by aluminium at 20% and cast iron at eight percent. The most commmon profile is the semi-circle gutter but this has limited capacity and requires more downpipes over longer runs. Plastic normally comes in only four colours but Hunter Building Products is offering non-standard green in its Regency range. Colour choice is better with aluminium systems and improved jointing methods are under develoment. Cast iron is mostly used in refurbishment work.

Getting your own back
Article Abstract:
Small building contractors are suffering from late payment of fees. Many believe late payment is a tactic used by large main contractors to force smaller firms out of business. Rupinder and Kulwinder Lall run Costfield, a specialist carpentry contractor with a turnover of three million pounds sterling a year. They have outstanding debts of 50,000 pounds and are involved in a lengthy battle to obtain fees from one large main contractor. Late payment costs management time and threatens cash flow.
