USPS tests new technologies for mailers
Article Abstract:
The US Postal Service in Feb 2001 at the Chicago Direct Marketing Days & Expo unveiled some technologies it is working on that it says could change direct marketing. These include various intelligent envelope and document technologies, which the agency has been developing for the past three years with its partners, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Media Lab and the Envelope Manufacturers Assn. MIT is developing other technologies that may help direct marketers, such as fiber fingerprinting, electronic ink, clothes that communicate and even shoes that generate power to manage large amount of data.

USPS boosts reach of Priority Mail Global service
Article Abstract:
The US Postal Service has further expanded its Priority Mail Global Guaranteed (PMGG) service. PMGG, which was launched in Apr 1999 in collaboration with DHL Worldwide Express Inc, offers two-day guaranteed delivery service to major cities in several countries for documents weighing not more than 70 lbs. In Nov 1999, the service was expanded to 46 additional countries. As of Jun 2000, the PMGG service is available to more than 200 countries.

USPS offers early retirement to help make ends meet
Article Abstract:
The US Postal Service is offering early retirement to some of its employees at its headquarters and 10 area offices through Oct 30, 2001. The retirement policy has been approved for the first time by the Office of Personnel Management. The plans to reduce its work force is aimed at helping reduce expenses by $1 billion annually until 2004. The US Postal Service hopes to eliminate 718 administrative positions.
