Meet the president
Article Abstract:
The UK Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is hoping its newly appointed president, Simon Kolsar, will be able to address the issue of increased information technology use in the profession, as well as heightening awareness of the institute amongst members. Kolsar is a trained quantity surveyor which he believes will stand him in good stead when trying to inform professionals of the benefits the institution can bring. Kolsar is hoping to improve training standards and business education offered by the RICS.

Where have all the young QSs gone?
Article Abstract:
A shortage in the number of newly qualified quantity surveyors (QSs) is driving wages up in the UK, as firms fight to attract the necessary people. The number of graduate QSs has fallen to 692 in 1997 from 1,103 in 1994. The industry is seeking ways to increase the number of graduate QSs, through fast-track training and taking students on directly from the age of 18. Industry experts are concerned such moves would lower standards.
