Upping the stakes

Article Abstract:

Profit-related pay schemes are, on the whole, attractive to both employers and staff. Employers are able to offer more attractive pay packages in good times without the possibility of having too large a wage bill and ultimately having to make redundancies in bad times. Staff have the additional benefit of tax freedom on profit-related pay. Employers in the UK can either use the government scheme or customize their own packages. The disadvantages include set-up costs and susceptibility to government policy changes. Schemes used by three building contractors are described.
