WS Atkins set for big buy

UK multidisciplinary building consultancy W S Atkins wants to expand widely before it commences it flotation in Aut 1994. Atkins has improved its building services expertise and wants to expand on the firm's design side. Atkins has been acquiring local authority building departments. It obtains a guaranteed workload in return for keeping staff and pledging to cut costs for local tax payers. Atkins took over Surrey County Council's architects and is negotiating with a further 30 county councils. Atkins has made plans to expand in the Middle East, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Germany.

Mace stake for sale as founder quits
Article Abstract:
Ian Macpherson announced in Mar 1999 that he is to leave project management and construction firm Mace. Macpherson, who founded this company in 1989 and is its chairman, now plans to found a music school in France. Macpherson has already sold part of his 51% stake in Mace to a trust which sells shares to Mace employees. He may sell his remaining 34% stake to an external partner, but he maintains that he has not yet found a buyer who satisfies his hopes for the future of Mace. The company, which has a staff of 500, has an annual turnover of 30 million pounds sterling.

Mace moves into the risk game
Article Abstract:
UK construction management company Mace is seeking to become a global player by introducing GMP contracts, which it calls 'capped construction management'. The new form, which is backed by a new type of insurance, will be introduced in January 1999. Clients accepting the new product will be guaranteed capped cost and time outcomes. Mace, which had a 1997 turnover of more than 30 million pounds sterling, hopes to become a world-class player within five years.
