Whitehall rejects union attack on PFI hospitals

Article Abstract:

High local demand for hospital beds and inadequate patient care will result from the building of a new 96 million pounds sterling hospital in Durham, according to UK public sector union Unison. Economic aspects of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) hospital have highlighted the high cost of debt interest being paid by the North Durham NHS Trust, which commissioned the hospital. The Trust will pay up to 7 million pounds sterling in debt each year to cover the cost of the hospital.

Key materials prices under pressure

Article Abstract:

Bricks, concrete and steel reinforcements suppliers have lowered their costs in a bid to become more competitive in a slack market. More materials are expected to follow this trend unless business from construction work on roads and buildings picks up. Manufacturers have attempted to speed up sales because they have not reduced their output to cater for lower requirements. Concrete prices have fallen by 10% to respond to the 10-20% fall in sales.

Multimillion pound transfers

Article Abstract:

UK construction analysts anticipate over one billion pounds sterling worth of business from football clubs by 2001. An increasing number of football clubs are investing in bigger and better facilities for all-year-round use. Some architects, builders and site management groups have already gained experience on several projects in the sector. Those without experience are not finding it difficult to enter the market.
