With mail order sales flat REI to open Tokyo store
Article Abstract:
REI, a US-based outdoor cataloger, plans to open a retail store in Tokyo to offset huge drop in its Japanese catalog sales. Declining real estate prices have made it attractive for catalogers to try the retail store channel. Nonetheless, REI does not intend to abandon the Japanese market, its most lucrative foreign market where it has 80,000 members. The Japanese recession must be viewed only as part of a cycle and Japanese consumers' interest in leisure and outdoor lifestyle is expected to take a turn for the better when the crisis bottoms out, said REI's public affairs manager Mike Collins.
