A big step up: some ladder manufacturers reacted promptly to the safety concerns raised by CHOICE; thanks to some simple design changes, we can now recommend more of their models
Article Abstract:
CHOICE magazine decided to retest some of the 19 models of ladders it found disappointing in Jan 1997 due to safety concerns. The re-tested ladders passed the safety standards. Most of the Bailey, Oldfields, and Welbilt models reduced their ladder's inclination to move when a person was standing on it to avoid a `walking' inclination. The ladders showed that their single-joint lock hinges were strong enough to support weight even if the ladders were not set up correctly. They were able to support a 130 kg weight on a middle tread on an uneven surface.
