Pros and cons of the high life

Article Abstract:

The east London borough of Tower Hamlets has a very large proportion of tower blocks, representing many of the social experiments which have been undertaken over recent decades. Latham House is one which has attracted particular attention recently. Only nine flats there are occupied, as no new tenants have been admitted since 1989. The remaining tenants are now being evicted, as the block has been purchased by a consortium of housing associations which is demanding vacant possession. However, some have grown very fond of living there, and are very reluctant to leave.

Cut your fuel bills

Article Abstract:

It can be hard for householders to discover the best ways to reduce their fuel bills, as heating engineers can give inconsistent and sometimes contradictory advice. In some cases, problems are overlooked, while in others energy-efficiency advice is insufficient. In general, it is worth keeping the boiler properly descaled and replacing any very narrow pipes. Attention should be given to wall and loft insulation, and to the use of draught-proofing around doors and windows. Even turning down the thermostat slightly will bring significant reductions in fuel costs.
