The French metal container and can industry's turnover dropped from FFr 7.82bn in 1987 to FFr 7.76bn in 1997, with the tonnage shipped by the industry rose from 601,000 tonnes in 1996 to 607,000 tonnes in 1997. This is due in part to the sluggishness of the French market, where shipments dropped around 3%. The rise in imports made up only slightly for the drop in the domestic market. Canned food and drink products are the principal outlets for metal cans and containers, representing 75.8% of applications. Shipments of cans for food rose in 1997, while the index for drink cans rose from 90.5 in 1996 to 105.8 in 1997. The industry's other outlets are industrial chemical products, representing 8%, aerosols representing 6.6%, lids and caps representing 5%, and other non-canned food products, which represents 4%. It is estimated that metal can production will rise 3% in 1998, due mainly to a rise in drink can production and cans for canned food.

The refrigerated fruit juice market in France rose more than 20% from 1996 to 1997. This market, estimated at 52mn litres for a turnover of FFr 800mn, represents 16% of the market value for fruit juice with long shelf life, and nearly 7% of the volume. This niche has considerable potential. It may follow a development in France similar to that of the United States, where refrigerated fruit juice already dominates the fruit juice market. Refrigerated fruit juice operators are copying the packaging of the fresh milk market: Fruivita, which holds a 30% market share, Tropicana which has a 22% market share and Minute Maid Premium have gable-top cartons; Andros has 50 centilitre plastic bottles for its Fruits Boire line, while Joker offers refrigerated juices in Botop white plastic bottles. This packaging reassures customers concerning the freshness and essential quality of refrigerated fruit juice.

Plastic bottles are gaining ground on the milk market. They dominate the fresh milk segment with a 90% market share, while they hold 22% on the segment of milk with a long shelf life. Single layer or three-layer high density polyethylene bottles with a UV barrier is used most for milk, and other models, such as a six-layer bottle with an oxygen barrier are being developed. Lactel has already opted for the six-layer bottle. There are other developments as well, such as EVON and Nylon barrier layers, and PET bottles with barrier properties are awaited. However, the development of these PET bottles would mean investing in rather expensive production lines.
