48th International Science and Engineering Fair, Louisville, Kentucky, 10-16 May 1997
Article Abstract:
The most outstanding projects in atmospheric science by high school students were recognized in the 48th International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, KY, on May 10-16, 1997. The contest drew more than 1,000 student-participants from across the US, its territories and more than 25 countries. The top award went to 17-year-old senior Carl H. Tape of West Valley High School on Fairbanks, AK, for the project 'Modeling Mirage Dynamics.' Gavin Ross Koo of Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, and Janna Kay Jensen of Roy, UT, garnered the second and third places, respectively.

Science Service Inc. sponsored the 49th International Science and Engineering Fair in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 14, 1998. As part of the fair, the American Meteorological Society cited three American high school students for working on projects related to the atmospheric sciences. The top award was bagged by Jennifer Andrews of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology for her research on adaptable parameters of the Tornado Detection Algorithm.

AMS presents special award to the Sweden-America Foundation
Article Abstract:
The American Meteorological Society has bestowed a special award to the Sweden-America Foundation at the Rossby-100 symposium banquet held in Stockholm, Sweden. The award was in recognition of the foundation's help in enabling Carl-Gustaf Rossby to migrate to the US in 1925. Rossby was noted for his contribution to the transformation of North American oceanography and meteorology, particularly in the fields of education, theory and weather forecasting.
