Clutch size and cavity excavation in parids (paridae): the limited breeding opportunities hypothesis tested
Article Abstract:
T.E. Martin's hypothesis that large clutches in cavity nesters only characterize nonexcavating species that depend on nesting holes excavated by other species, with nonexcavators having potentially limited and unpredictable breeding opportunities is tested using data on European and North American Paridae. Results do not support the limited breeding opportunities hypothesis, since clutch size and propensity to excavate appear to have evolved separately.

A "good-sperm" model can explain the evolution of costly multiple mating by females
Article Abstract:
The 'good-gene' hypothesis seeks to explain why females mate with more than one male when they do not appear to receive any direct benefit from such behavior. This hypothesis proposes that females remate to fertilize their eggs with the sperm of the most competitive male. A quantitative genetic model examining the good-gene hypothesis by focusing on female mating frequency and the general viability of both sexes.

Facultative sex allocation by workers and the evolution of polyandry by queens in social hymenoptera
Article Abstract:
Facultative biasing of sex allocation is shown to enhance worker fitness of honeybees. The study strengthens the idea that worker allocation behavior strongly influences queen mating frequency. The results of the research confirmed earlier studies that the additional inclusive fitness benefits to queens from high mating frequency decline when average mating frequency in the population increases.
