Comments on AMS policy statement on tornado forecasting and warning
Article Abstract:
The American Meteorological Society's policy statement concerning dissemination of tornado forecasts and warnings is laudable in that it emphasized the use of different communication methods. This policy is especially important for people with hearing disorders who would not be able to understand the urgency of television messages unless they are accompanied by closed captioning. Likewise, the value of pagers for transmitting such warnings should not be overlooked as these instruments can alert hearing impaired people who would otherwise be insensible to broadcast warnings.

Tornado forecasting and warning
Article Abstract:
The installation of Doppler radars throughout the US have improved the capability to monitor thunderstorms and issue appropriate warnings on imminent formations of tornadoes by detecting mesocyclones. However, the National Weather Service cannot issue warnings solely on the basis of mesocyclones since tornadoes are not always identified with them. Visual sightings remain the most reliable indicator. Amateur radio operators should therefore be tapped to assist in communications. The public should also be informed on how to handle threats so they could respond properly.

Message from the president
Article Abstract:
Weather forecasting has progressed rapidly, due to improved investments in both money and intellect. Meteorologists have thus become more credible to the public and to decision makers. The rising credibility of the meteorological profession can be further boosted by communicating improvements in predictive capability to more users, enhancing employment opportunities for the profession, encouraging broader professional education for environmental forecasters and promoting atmospheric policy studies.
