Effects of phytoplankton blooms on the cycling of manganese and iron in coastal waters
Article Abstract:
Phytoplankton blooms are examined in relation to manganese and iron cycling in coastal waters of the North Sea. Topics include seasonal succession of plankton, Mn and Fe; regeneration of Fe and Mn; the role of aggregates, pelagic heterotrophs and sediments; contribution of Mn and Fe by rivers; and other processes.

Transitions between Aulacoseira and Anabaena dominance in a turbid river weir pool
Article Abstract:
The article focuses on the transition between phytoplancton species Aulacoseira and Anabaena caused by thermal stratification of the water column in Maude Weir pool. The separation of the phytoplancton population into illuminated surface and euphotic depth, and the effect of light on growth rates, are discussed.
