From algal competition to animal production: enhanced ecological efficiency of Brachionus plicatilis with a mixed diet
Article Abstract:
Production of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was higher with an even mixture of diatoms and flagellates than with one-sided mixtures. Nutrient competition affected the species composition of phytoplankton. High atomic ratios of Si to N were associated with diatom dominance, while los ratios were associated with dominance of flagellates. Medium ratios were associated with even mixtures of diatoms and flagellates.

Selective prediction by the mosshead sculpin Clinocottus globiceps on the sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima and its two algal symbionts
Article Abstract:
The mosshead sculpin Clinocottus globiceps practices selective predation on the sea anemone Anthopleura elegantissima. The sea anemone has two different algal endosymbionts, zooxanthellae and zoochlorellae. The sculpin chooses to feed on the zooxanthellate anemones rather than the zoochlorellate or algae-free anemones. Zooxanthellae become degraded in the fish gut, whereas the zoochlorellae are unaffected.

Algal blooms on coral reefs: What are the causes?
Article Abstract:
Causes of algal blooms on coral reefs are discussed relative to a study of reefs of Jamaica and southeast Florida. The concept that a definitive nutrient threshold exists for all coral reefs is not valid. The reefs exist on wide, shallow continental margins with turbid nutrient-rich waters, and they are found in upwelling areas with seasonal blooms of macroalgae.
