Geons and geons
Article Abstract:
The coming millennium offers an opportunity to devise units of time with longer duration. Thus, the word 'geon,' which comes from the phrase geologic eon, was suggested to represent specified 100 m.y. intervals of geologic time, calculating backward from the present. Developed as an extension of a calendar scale of decades, centuries and millennia, the unit was designed as a simple alternative to the proposal of the International Union of Geological Sciences Subcommittee on Precambrian Stratigraphy for a complicated formal terminology of named, time-defined units for the Proterozoic Eon.
