High-altitude hurricane study could save lives and money

Article Abstract:

The NASA will launch two aircrafts to gain a better understanding and enhance ground-based predictions of hurricanes. The Convection and Moisture Experiment mission is designed to look for ways that could save lives and property through increased warning time and save money by reducing the sizes of evacuation sites. Enhanced hurricane prediction is expected to result from high-resolution spatial and temperature information on the motion, dynamics and structure of hurricanes.

NASA hurricane study reveals intriguing results

Article Abstract:

NASA and other weather researchers have obtained puzzling information on the development of hurricanes through upper-level winds. Mission scientist Robbie Hood of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center revealed that the wind patterns flowing into and out of a hurricane are much more complexed than has been anticipated. There were times when strong winds were detected at locations which are much farther from the eyewall and had magnitudes which were greater than predicted.
