Null models and fish communities: evidence of non-random patterns

Article Abstract:

The Monte Carlo model, the log-linear model, a hybrid model of the Monte Carlo and log-linear models and a coefficient model were tested as to their ability to correctly assess fish population distributions in several lakes of Ontario. The log-linear, hybrid and coefficient null models showed that the fish populations follow a nonrandom structure. The different result obtained by the Monte Carlo model is attributed to inherent flaws in its design.

Morphological assortment and the assembly of communities of introduced passeriforms on oceanic islands: Tahiti versus Oahu

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the assembly of passeriform communities in Tahiti and Oahu, Hawaii. Results show that although both islands exhibit similarities in size, equator distance and passeriform introductions, more species of the fauna were successfully introduced in Oahu compared to Tahiti. However, patterns of morphological overdispersion were observed for both island communities.

Unsaturated fish communities in African rivers

Article Abstract:

A study of 47 retained sample of fish communities sampled in pools in 10 rivers located in Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa shows that richness of local species increases after the increase in number of species present by biological introduction accompanied by the extinction of some native species. Pool length has no effect on species richness.
