Odor transport in turbulent flows: constraints on animal navigation
Article Abstract:
Odor transport in turbulent flows, which constitute constraints on animal movement, are discussed. The dispersal of odor plumes in estuarine tidal channel flows have been studied using two approaches. In one odor plumes are described by the distribution of the properties of individual odor filaments. In one statistical tools for describing mean and variance measurements for concentration fluctuations developed by atmospheric researchers interested in pollution and chemical warfare are used. Organisms seem to be able to depend on a number of metrics to successfully orient in an odor plume. Temporal and spatial scales of odor dispersal may limit strategies used by navigating organisms and influence effectiveness of odor-mediated search.

Homeostasis in the essential amino acid composition of the marine copepod Euterpina acutifrons
Article Abstract:
The essential amino acid composition (EAA) of eggs and females of the marine copepod Euterpina acutifrons and their food has been studied using copepods fed with different microalgae. EAAs of females did not vary significantly, but EAAs of eggs were different for different food sources. Higher reproductive success was seen as the EAA of females and food were closer together. Chemical homeostasis accounts for the selective retention of amino acids seen in copepods and also for the variation in conversion efficiencies of consumed nitrogen with food source.
