Verner Edward Suomi: 1915-1995
Article Abstract:
Meteorologist Verner Edward Suomi, founder of the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) of the University of Wisconsin in Madison and known as the father of satellite meteorology, died on July 30, 1995 at age 80. He was the director of SSEC from 1965 to 1980 and was the first director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Studies in 1980. He taught meteorology and its related sciences at the Dept. of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from 1948-1990, where he achieved the status of emeritus professor in 1986.

Philip F. Clapp: 1912-1997
Article Abstract:
Philip F. Clapp, an eminent meteorologist known for his research on general atmospheric circulation and its predictability, died in Annapolis, MD, in Jan 1997. His other contributions include studies on motion and development of the long waves in the westerlies, methods of extended-range forecasting and the confluence theory of the jet stream. Clapp is survived by his second wife Margaret, children, Anne, John, James and Anne and two grandchildren.
