Restoration of the food web of an alpine lake following fish stocking
Article Abstract:
An examination of zooplankton in Snowflake Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, between 1966 and 1995 shows slow recovery from fish stocking. Hesperodiaptomus arcticus, a calanoid copepod, disappeared after trout stocking of the lake in the 1960s. The fish population disappeared in the mid-1980s, but H. arcticus was not reestablished. It was reintroduced in 1992, after which the population expanded exponentially for four years. Populations of rotifers, copepod nauplii and large diatoms were being suppressed by H. arcticus, even at densities lower than in typical alpine lakes.

Consequences of pelagic food-web changes during a long-term lake oligotrophication process
Article Abstract:
Oligotrophication of Lago Maggiore, Italy, was associated with changes in pelagic communities. A gradual abatement of phosphorus caused oligotrophication to occur between 1983 and 1995. Phosphorus reduction is correlated with changes in chlorophyll and biovolume, but the increase in cell numbers and decline in average cell size of phytoplankton may also be dependent on changes in the food web. Bythotrophes longimanus increases were associated with a decrease in Daphnia numbers and an increase in Daphnia body size, while fish stocks were stable.
