Summary of an informal workshop on adaptive observations and FASTEX
Article Abstract:
The Fronts and Atlantic Storm Track Experiment (FASTEX) was established to improve cyclone forecasting through the implentation of additional observations in areas where analysis errors are most likely to occur. Through the use of movable observing platforms, FASTEX will be able to test the feasibility and impact of targeting such critical regions. FASTEX is scheduled to have its initial run on January and February of 1997 and its initial focus will be on the area just of the Atlantic coast of Europe. In preparation for this event, an informal meeting was held on May 25 and 26, 1996 at the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology division of the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

Links between variations in solar activity, atmospheric conductivity, and clouds: an informal workshop
Article Abstract:
The relationship between changes in solar activity, atmospheric conductivity and clouds were discussed during a workshop held at the Los Alamos National Laboratory on June 20-21, 1996. Papers on the subject were read and discussed. Several papers discussed correlations between solar inputs and meteorological phenomena. Statistical analysis of global climate information clearly indicated such links. The effects of ionization by cosmic radiation on the rate of freezing of water in clouds at very high altitudes were also discussed.

The Hurricane Landfall Workshop summary
Article Abstract:
Research and observation opportunities in attaining hurricane pre-landfall track forecast gains were a priority for participants of The Hurricane Landfall Workshop held from Nov 15 to 20, 1997. The biggest increase in the precision of track forecast may be realized through improvements in the initial environment and vortex specification. Targeted observing strategies are also being planned to exploit the advantages offered by new mobile platforms such as the GulfStream IV and unmanned aerial vehicles.
